Ocean and Expedition Cruising
Ocean cruising is an incredible way to explore many parts of the world. Unpack once, sail in luxury, and access the wonders of the destination with unparalleled ease. Your “floating hotel” can moor up right in the heart of your next destination city, allowing you to step off and start your experience right away.
9 Reasons to do an Ocean Cruise
#1 Access to unique parts of the world
While some crusie ships do tend to focus on well travelled routes, many will take you off the beaten track, or to places you might not otherwise go
#2 Removes all the hassles
The majority of costs associated with cruising are either automatically included or can be purchased in packs (a drinks package for instance). With your Luxury line cruises you are likely to have no additional costs at all as excursions, tipping and beverages are included.
The 24 hr concierge desks, room service, and healthy staff to guest ratios mean help is always right at your finger tips.
Excursions are well
#3 pack and unpack once
Your content goes here. Edit or remove this text inline or in the module Content settings. You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.
#4 Catering to a wide variety of tastes
It is not always easy having everyone in your group on the same level for entertainemtn or interests (be it 2 or 22!), but an ocean cruise offers such a wide range of options that there really is something for everyone,
#5 Safety and Security
Because you will have one or more tour managers around with experience in the area they will have lots of local knowledge and be able to provide insights to keep you secure and safe. Should a problem occur they will also know the best way to solve it.
Because the ships have very little motion on the rivers it is very unlikely for you to experiecne seasickness.
Travelling with a group also offers the security of more more people looking out for each other.
#6 Rooms with a view
Even the best hotels in the world can only offer the same view from your room night after night, but on a river cruise your view changes constantly throughout your journey.
#7 incredible dining throughout the day
Cruise lines in the Luxury, Premium and Contemporary categories are sure to have many different dining options. From Buffet or Pizza bars to 5 course Michelin restaurants. The wide range on offer caters to all, and allows yoy to dine as per your mood or plans. There is also a lot of flexibility in where and when you dine on a ship.
#8 Price advantage
Your cruise experience is bundled into one cruise package. If you factor in: Entertainment, meals, beverages (when included), transport and accommodation there is great value to be had.
#9 Relaxing and stressfree
With few exceptions your river cruise experience can be said to have:
- No Tipping
- No worrying about logistics of how to get from point A to point B
- No language barriers for essentials
- No trying to find a good place to eat (local guides can recommend where to eat according to preferences when not on the ship)
- No currency concerns as everything but shopping tends to be included
Cruising Regions of the World
There are many different areas where cruising takes place, from the tropics to the poles, and each area has it’s own appeal
The Mediterranean is a fantastic place to cruise if you are looking to experience a lot of variety in a 7-14 day cruise. Most itienraries will start in Barcelona, Rome, Venice or Athens, and either return to the starting port or finishing in one of the others mentioned.
Popular cruise ports:
Barcelona, Civitavecchia (Rome), Venice, Dubrovnik, Santorini, Gibralter, Naples, Instanbul, Athens, Monte Carlo
A Baltic cruise covers the northernmost regions in Europe. From Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Denmark to Russia and Estonia. This diversity ensures you’ll be treated to a treasure trove of culture and history along the way.
Popular cruise ports:
St Petersburg, Berlin (via Warnemunde), Tallinn, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Riga, Stockholm
Caribbean and Pacific North America
The Caribbean is the most populous cruise region. With tropical weather, a huge number of islands, rich colonial history, and innumerable beaches it offers a great deal for all cruise fans.
Between New York and Florida, and California and Seattle/Vancouver, there are also a range of cruise options which stop at significant cities and sites along the way.
Lastly there is the Panama Canal, one of the greatest engineering feats, which connects the Caribbean with the Pacific Ocean. A popular itinerary would take you from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, down through the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and usually finishing up in either LA or San Diego.
South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia
Close to home but rich in experiences this region has a few year round cruise lines but the majority of options will be in the summer months.
Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are where the majority of cruise lines depart from, those there are a few out of Perth as well.
For first time cruise passengers might consider a seven day itinerary in the Whitsundays or even better yet French Polynesia (Tahiti) before taking on longer cruises.
Asia and the middle East
One of the great things about cruising in Asia is that you have a great wealth of history and contrast in a very small area, as most countries in Asia are small. Experiencing Thailand one day, Cambodia the next, then onto Vietnam the day after.
Other advantages of cruising this area is combining the security of the familiar (meals and room onboard) with the exotic onshore.
There is a big price advantage too, especially when sailing around Japan, as hotel prices can be really high, but your “floating hotel” doesn’t have to be.
Alaska and North/South Polar
Alaskan cruises offer some of the best wildlife experiences there are. Cruise up or down the Inside Passage, and into Glacier Bay. See Grizzly bears and Golden Eagles hunting, and whales breaching, and get that perfect photo. There are even some small ship “expedition style” cruises which focus on secluded inlets which may not be visited by another ship for weeks at a time, offering really unique experiences.
The Polar regions, about as remote as it gets, offers majestic contrast to our everyday. You can brave the crossing to Antartica like the explorers of old, or chose a fly in, cruise, fly out option. Visit the King Penguins and their vast colonies.
The North Pole/Arctic circle offers it’s own range of way to visit. From the Noerthwest passage above Canada, to the inlets of Greenland and a voyage to Svalbard.
Luxury cruise lines
These include the highest rated and awarded ships in the world. Often all-inclusive they take cuisine to another level offering the finest of dining experiences. This genre is characterised by exceptional service, large suites, mixed with unique and absorbing destinations that only smaller ships can reach. Generally catering for a smaller number of passengers, these boutique style ships offer you a more personalized and intimate experience.

EXPLORATION AND ADVENTURE
Expedition cruise lines are all about opening up destinations and giving passengers a comfortable but authentic experience of some of the world’s barely accessible wilderness locations.
A Lindblad-National Geographic expedition is arguably the most exhilarating overseas adventure experience a person can have. Nothing else comes close to approximating its authenticity and all-five-senses engagement. We offer you the world’s ultimate, authentic expedition experience: Discover the planet’s most remarkable places, accompanied by experts able to illuminate all you see, and with cool tools to use to explore up close and personally.
In 1966 Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first-ever citizen-explorer expedition to Antarctica, inventing the category of expedition travel. We celebrate his legacy of conservation and exploration.
Regarded as the father of ecotourism, Lars-Eric was literally the first travel company owner to take travelers where only scientists had gone—the first to take citizen explorers to many destinations, including Antarctica and Galápagos, in 1966 and 1967, respectively.
By believing that educated people who saw things with their own eyes would be a potent force for the preservation of the places they visited, he made his notions a powerful force for the good of conservation and restoration projects worldwide.
Lars-Eric was a real—as well as symbolic—father, and since 1979 his son, Sven-Olof Lindblad, has expanded his legacy by providing transformative travel experiences in the world’s most remarkable places.
Renowned expedition teams & a National Geographic alliance
The quality of our veteran staff is the reason the Lindblad name is known and respected for top-quality expeditions. And, since 2004 when Sven Lindblad forged an unprecedented alliance with National Geographic, our guests have enjoyed an unparalleled opportunity: to travel with the finest expedition teams in the travel industry, plus National Geographic expedition explorers, photographers, writers, scientists, and other experts in diverse fields. There simply is no better team anywhere, and no other experience comparable to the quality of insight, engagement and sheer good times our expeditions offer.
Our definition of Un-ness: Breaking away from the masses. Challenge. Freely used to release, exemplify, or intensify a force or quality. To engage, connect, and explore unique places, oneself, and with others on a most uncommon adventure.
Small ships, BIG adventures
Welcome aboard. After a crew member gives you a quick tour of your cabin, take a stroll around the ship and head to the lounge for a glass of bubbly and to meet your shipmates. Then you’re off on an all-out active experience, thanks to our uncompromising commitment to going places and doing things others can’t. Small ships—hosting 90 guests, tops—fulfill unimpeded excitement about truly getting in the wild with a few nature-leaning souls.
No matter how you travel—with a companion, family, solo, or in a group—connection, place, and adventure are at the heart of your exploration. Uncover hidden treasures, meet locals (the human, feathered, and wild-and-woolly ones), and learn while having fun. Change the way you see the world.
Small group travel—from the ship itself to groups of a dozen or so afield—puts you in on the action (not watching from afar), with AHA! and “I-can’t-believe-I-just-did-that” moments around every corner.
Seriously—they’re aces. Our guides have vast and deep experience, plus an impressive collection of advanced degrees in curiosity-peaking subjects from whales to fungi to geology. Their enthusiasm is infectious.
Home away from home
Boats are comfortable, welcoming, and unique in style and personality. All are adventure-ready for gearing up, kicking back, and mixing and mingling.
Adventure for all
Kayak or paddle board. Snorkel or skiff. Beach stroll, hike, or mountain goat climb. There are plenty of options and equipment for everyone to join in the fun.
Active as you like it
Do as much or as little as you like. On top of the daily activities, ease into the day with sunrise stretches on the top deck. There’s exercise equipment at the ready, anytime. Or just watch the landscape go by.
Fresh, hand-crafted cuisine
You didn’t know it would be this good. Chefs (including pastry chefs) impress meal after meal with locally sourced ingredients, swoon-worthy desserts, and baked-on-board breads.
Cheers to that!
An astounding array of beverage options, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic (signature cocktails every night!), mean you’re never far from a toast. And it’s all included.
Zero hidden costs
What most defines your trip is included in the fare—excursions, adventure equipment, transfers, and baggage handling. Put your wallet away (until it’s time to recognize your topnotch crew).
Accommodating … and then some
Dietary restrictions? Special occasion? Need a little extra help on a hike? It’s our business to make sure your adventure not only matches your needs and expectations, but surpasses them. Just ask and we’ll do our best!
The ineffable spirit of adventure
We’re all in the same boat. Crew and guests alike, wide-eyed with wonder and childlike curiosity—and it shows. The excitement. Laughs. Collective energy. Then hug it out at the end of your adventure.
Peregrine Adventure Cruises
A premium cruise without the premium crowds.
Adventure Cruising combines the real-life experiences of our tried and tested small-group trips with the added comfort of a well-appointed leisure cruise. But instead of shuffle board and onboard casinos, we’re all about taking you to the smaller ports (the one’s the bigger ships just can’t get to) and really taking you into the heart of the destination. It might be skipping along the unexplored western fjords of Iceland, stopping in at Cycladic ports for grilled octopus and fresh olives, or dropping anchor for a swim at a secluded archipelago off Thailand’s west coast. Small, intimate, comfortable and local-led – this is cruising at its finest.
G ADventures MArine
There’s adventure aplenty out there beyond the shore, but unless you’ve got gills or flippers, you’ll need a ship to find them. Marine tours are designed for travellers of all stripes, from experienced cruisers and sailors to landlubbers who’ve never set foot on a boat. And they go just about everywhere there’s water. If you can float there, you can go there. Go there.
The Marine program covers all aspects of ship-borne travel, from nature-focused adventures in the Galápagos and the polar regions to sailing trips in Thailand, the Maldives, and Europe. Get to the places you’d otherwise miss and get closer to the things that make them worth visiting than you ever dreamed possible.
The poles of the Earth, the wonders of the Galápagos, the mysteries of the Amazon, out-of-the-way Greek islands and other great places are best (and sometimes only) accessed by boat. Marine trips get you there aboard small ships, exclusive yachts, and catamarans.
Expedition style cruising is a broad topic, but takes in more adventure destinations such as the Galapagos Islands, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and Madagascar.
Similar to the Polar section, these cruises tend to have unique vessels of varying standard.
More About the Galapagos:
Located off the coast of South America, the Galapagos Islands have some of the most diverse wildlife in the world making it a paradise for diving, bird watching and all nature lovers. Small ship Galapagos Island Tours will give you the opportunity to watch giant Galapagos tortoises and Blue Footed Boobiesin the morning and snorkel with sea lions and marine iguana’s in the afternoon. Book a Galapagos Cruise around the famous archipelago and experience an unrivalled wildlife-viewing adventure which you will never forget.
SPECIALTY AND SAILING
“Specialty” category cruise lines are generally smaller, more regional sailings, often with a strong local flavour. There is some cross over with adventure cruising and the destination is as important as the ship itself. All tend to have their own unique style.
Sailing ships combining the comfort of a cruise ship with the exhilaration and romance of a yacht.

Aranui 5 Freighter Cruises
An Aranui 5 Cruise is something quite unique in the South Pacific and reminiscent of the non-timetable trips taken in days gone by travellers “hitching a ride” on an old copra boat as it did the rounds of far-flung islands picking up copra (dried coconut flesh) and dropping off supplies at remote communities. On an Aranui Cruise you can still experience something of this wonderful atmosphere while travelling in the air-conditioned comfort of a modern purpose-built cargo-passenger ship on a schedule you can rely on to depart and return to Papeete as planned. In some of the remote places you visit on Aranui, this ship is the only regular means of travel and freight services they have.
On Aranui 5 there will only be around 260 passengers on board and on any typical voyage they will be real ‘travellers” from all over the world, so expect many interesting conversations, especially at meal times on board, where you will share tables of up to eight people. Breakfast is buffet style as is lunch; however, many lunches are spent ashore at local restaurants or markets. You will enjoy the French-inspired food at dinners on the ship. House wine is included with lunch and dinners on board and although premium wines are available at additional cost, most people will find the house wine very pleasant.
Partaking in the port and historical lectures on board helps one understand something of the places you will visit before you get there and certainly adds to the whole experience. Of course, there are fun things to participate in too such as Tamure dance classes and Polynesian concerts etc. The facilities on board also add to the enjoyment of the trip; such things as captioned French movies, a gym, library, swimming pool and even a coin-operated laundry.
The ports of call are naturally stunning. After a couple of ports, you really get into the groove and feel the cares of everyday life melting away. Many of the shore excursions are included in the cruise cost and there are sometimes optional activities such as game fishing etc which you pay for. Enjoy church visits, local markets and local sights in these remote naturally beautiful islands. It is also interesting to watch the sometimes tricky berthing of the ship and the cargo handling. At some stops, the ship doesn’t berth but just anchors off and passengers and cargo are moved by launch and barges. This adds something to the whole experience too.
Aranui Cruises now include Bora Bora as the last stop on its itinerary. Entering the Bora Bora Lagoon by sea is a special treat and enjoying a day in Bora Bora is yet another highlight of this splendid cruise experience. Another new option is their twice-yearly trip which takes in remote Pitcairn Island. On these voyages, Aranui 5 follows a different itinerary taking in Magareva, Adamstown Pitcairn Island, Aukena, Rapa and Raivavae (Pitcairn voyages do not include Bora Bora). These voyages are always very sought after and sell out quickly, so we advise you to book really early.
How to sum up the Aranui Cruise? “Delightfully different” is a term that springs to mind. You will spend a delightful 13 days on a modern cargo-passenger ship on which you will enjoy the company of some very interesting fellow cruisers while you visit some of the Pacific’s most stunningly beautiful natural surroundings and remote communities.
